Joowon MacDowell
My inspiration for art comes from the deep emotional imprint of my personal experience...
My approach is finding the connection between the human experiences that correspond with nature. Through anthromorphism, I represent the story in more engaging ways for children while revealing the beauty of nature. The color, shape, and textures used in my drawings are based on deep research of the subject to develop its style and personality without losing the accurate representation. This process is driven by intention, which stemmed from my desire to help people on their life’s journey.
Welcome To My Website
I initially began my career as a game artist. During this time I developed an interest in yoga and meditation, which made me realize that I wanted to make a lasting impact with my art and help people on their personal journeys. This led me to become a teacher, allowing me to hone my skills and understand the power of visual delivery. Now I use these skills to deliver life’s profound lessons to young children through book illustrations.

I use watercolor, gouach, pen, and ink in ways that create both realistic and fantastical creatures. I try to make colors bleed into one another to make the illustration more impressionistic and thought provoking. Instead of adhearing to what is aesthetically pleasing to grown-ups, children are drawn to high contrast value and simpler depictions of the characters, which attracts children’s interests. I’m inspired by artists such as Eric Carle, Antoine de Saint-Exupery, and Shel Silverstein.
